kirksaunders were appointed for the design of the Reinforced Concrete substructure, ground floor and first floor transfer structure to support a Metframe lightweight building system and concrete floor above. We developed a reinforced concrete solution consisting of columns and a 400mm thick flat first floor slab providing a relatively column free student union space at ground floor.
We worked closely in the early phases of the project with the client and architect to simplify foundation and basement requirements to suit the stringent archaeological constraints existing on the site. This required an archaeological ‘horizon’ being set into which the foundations could not penetrate to avoid disturbing archaeological deposits. We also proposed locating the new basement within an existing basement excavation saving the client site time and cost.
